Identifying 4 Common Boiler Problems

Setting the timer on a boiler

In much the same way that even the most well engineered vehicles will require repairs from time to time, even the best boilers will need to be looked at by a professional gas engineer every now and then. This is particularly true here in the UK, where many households and businesses use their boilers on a daily basis.

The real question is: how do you know when your boiler needs repairs? As one of the leading providers of central heating systems, the team at West London Gas have extensive experience across just all about aspects of boiler installation and maintenance. Be sure to give us a call if you notice any of the following problems with your boiler:

Your Boiler Stops Producing Heat

The most obvious sign that there’s something wrong with your boiler is that it stops producing heat and/or hot water. While this symptom may be very noticeable, it can be tricky to diagnose due to the sheer number of components that could be to blame. For example, loss of hot water could potentially be due to a damaged diaphragm, faulty valves or problems with the thermostat. This is not an exhaustive list, so for best results please contact a Gas Safe certified engineer who will be able to help you pinpoint the problem.

Your Radiator has Started Making Odd Noises

Another telltale sign that there may be something wrong with your boiler is if it starts making strange noises. Rumbling sounds may be an indicator of kettling, which is caused when limescale accumulates in your boiler and prevents water from flowing freely. Meanwhile, gurgling noises may be related to air getting trapped in your radiator. In both scenarios, a certified Gas Safe engineer will have the expertise needed to address the issue and keep your radiator running smoothly.

Your Boiler’s Pilot Light Goes Out

A critical component in many boiler models, the pilot light is responsible for lighting the gas and producing heat. If the light is extinguished, your boiler will not be able to function correctly. The most common cause of an extinguished pilot light is restrictions in the gas supply, but it can also be related to draughts or a faulty sensor. You can try to reignite the pilot light yourself as per the instructions in the manufacturer’s manual, but if the issue persists you may need to consider enlisting the services of a professional heating engineer.

Your Boiler Starts Losing Pressure

Your boiler relies on pressure to function. If there’s a significant drop in pressure (you can check by simply inspecting the integrated pressure gauge), there’s a good chance that your boiler will not be able to produce heat reliably. Low boiler pressure is typically caused by a water leak, a faulty relief valve, or may be related to bleeding your radiators.

Have you noticed one of these issues? Whatever the problem, West London Gas is here to help. Contact the team today to find out more about our expert boiler repair, maintenance and installation services.
